Position Title
Committee Member
My name is Kris Jayme and I use they/them pronouns. I am a reentry student studying Community and Regional Development in the college of Agriculture. My specific field of interest is disability rights and advocacy, so this committee aligns perfectly with my future ambitions. Another possible goal of mine is to become a research librarian in disability studies, but first I need to decide if I'm ready to commit to a Masters program. I have a disorder that affects my collagen, and thus a majority of body systems as well as mental illnesses. Every day seems to be a different flare, which can make regular attendance a struggle. As somebody who had to take a break from education due to the severity of my disabilities, my dream is to make education more accessible. Students should not have to choose between maintaining their health and getting an education, disabled or able-bodied. They should not have to struggle and burn-out when accommodations are easily made available. Now as a slightly older student, I see even more aspects of the university that need amending and I am ready to put in the work.
I am queer and transgender, so I understand the struggles that come with intersecting LGBTQ+ and disabled identities. It can be hard enough being treated as an equal with just one of these labels, so I hope that LGBTQ+ spaces can become more accommodating to disabled students and vice versa. My hope is that our DRAC team will make some lasting changes on the UC Davis campus that will help connect marginalized communities. I am very excited to spend my last year as a member of the committee and can't wait to see what we accomplish for the community
